The first community-based TV station in Ghana, Coastal TV is hitting the screens in Cape Coast and its environs. The TV station is a project of Center for Intellectual Learning and Talents Development (CILTAD). CILTAD has been in existence for the past 14 years conducting cultural exchange programmes with Denmark.
The brains behind the setting up of the station are Mr. and Mrs. Selete Nyomi, owners of Agoro Fie and Defensive Driving Institute all based in Cape Coast. Coastal TV started test transmission in April this year but had to go off because its mast was destroyed by a heavy storm, which hit Cape Coast in May. It resumed its test transmission about three months ago.
According to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the station, Mr. Selete Nyomi the main objective of the station is to promote development in the central region.
“The dream of setting up the station came to mind about 8 years ago when I was staying at 4th ridge; I rebroadcast DSTV programs to people living around 4th ridge so I said to myself why can’t I set up a TV station to serve the people of Cape Coast. This dream comes and goes, but it became more real about 2 to 3 years ago,” he said.
Mr. Nyomi noted that the setting up of the station has not being easy; he had to erect a new mast after it had being destroyed by a storm and also battle with the load shedding exercise.
“It took me two solid years to get authorization from the National Communications Authority (NCA),”he stated.
He expressed his heart-felt gratitude to all those who have help him in diverse ways to realize his dream especially Mr. Wilson Arthur, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Skyy Group of Companies operators of Skyy Power Fm and Skyy TV in Takoradi.
According to Mr. Nyomi, the station is in collaboration with Vermont Community TV in the US who have so far given the station equipment and would be sending down representatives to the inauguration of the station in November.
The station can be located at 4th ridge in Cape Coast; it also covers two districts Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly and Komenda Edinafo Eguafo Abirem (KEEA) district.
The station has two Co-directors, Mrs. Gifty Nyomi and Dr. Ekow Asmah a lecturer at the University of Cape Coast.
