In August and September of 2007, heavy and persistent rains caused massive flooding in the Upper East, Upper West and the Northern Region, especially along the Black and white Volta and their tributaries. The flooding along the White Volta's and its tributaries was compounded by the spillage of a Dam in Burkina Faso.
According to publications, the rain and windstorm affected houses, farmlands, bridges/culverts, dams and life (human and animals). Over 307 were affected. 16,651 homes in over 500 communities were affected in the. 49 persons died, 13 bridges collapsed, 2 dams were damaged both in Upper East whilst livestock and farms were destroyed, water supply systems destroyed, 49 schools damaged, and then there was an outbreak of water-related diseases; diarrhoea, dysentery and cholera. This was a true disaster.
Multichoice Ghana's broadcast platform covers the whole of Ghana including the northern regions and therefore as responsible corporate citizens Multichoice Ghana decided that it was necessary to assist one of the communities they operate in, which had been affected by this devastating event. MCG therefore donated food to the tune of C150, 000,000 (GC 150,000) which will provide meals for may displaced families.
Samuel Baimbill-Johnson stated at the handing over event that "disaster reduction is everybody's business and all of us can do our part to raise awareness, reduce our vulnerability to future hazards and assist with relevant donations". It is because of this that Multichoice Ghana thought it fitting that we make our contribution to getting the community back on its feet.
MCA is keenly aware of its responsibility as an African business, not only to provide television services that deliver entertainments and information, but to contribute meaningfully towards the development of communities in which it operates.
Present to receive the donation were the Minister of Interior, Hon K. Bartels, Min of National Security, Hon Francis Poku, Minister of Health, Major Ret. Courage Quarshigah, Minister of Water Resources, Works and housing, Alhaji Boniface Sadik).
