A number of radio presenters in Kumasi have condemned the recent media survey conducted by Survey Consult in October this year on the performance of radio stations in Kumasi, describing it as unauthentic.
According to them, the survey lacked credibility and the manner in which it was conducted needed to be questioned since it favoured a particular radio station.
The radio industry in Ghana, they stated, only knew of the Ghana All Media and Products Survey (GAM), which had been accredited and accepted by all to conduct such survey for the operators of radio and television in the country.
One of the popular radio presenters, who is also the host of Kumasi-based Nkosuo FM’s morning show, Fred Asamoah, aka Daddy Fred, in an interview with DAILY GUIDE said he doubted the credibility of those who conducted the research on the performance of radio stations in the Ashanti Region and its environs.
Daddy Fred indicated that he sees it as a manipulated survey which does not reflect the views of listeners. He stated that it was a deliberate attempt to project some radio stations and underrate others.
“I must factually admit that some radio stations in Ashanti Region are perceived to be big stations as a result of the earlier projections and surveys rating their programmes and listenership higher.”
According to him, upon critical analysis one could deduce that some of the opinion polls conducted were sponsored by certain radio stations in order to rate them higher and eventually attract more adverts.
“This really deceives the general public. This is not fair. What were their criteria and modalities? I appeal to the opinion poll conductors to be free and fair in their surveys so that results would be readily accepted by all stations. They should not throw dust in the eyes of the public,” he declared.
DAILY GUIDE investigation has established that stakeholders in the radio and television industries hardly complain about GAM survey reports because of their credibility.
Many have come to realize that the recent survey was only meant to demoralise certain radio stations, and not to serve as a guideline in their activities.
They indicated that a GAM survey covers every radio programme on hourly basis and also comes out with data on how the survey was conducted on each programme on radio.
