About 400 guests made up of mothers and their children were expected to fill the Unique Floral Gardens where some of them were to be honoured by Asempa 94.7 FM as part of activities marking this year’s mothers day celebration, but that was not to be.
The few who were able to make it to the serene Unique Flora Gardens on Sunday, seem to be singing, Rain rain go away in anticipation that there will be a sudden change in the weather so that mothers who had travelled far and near could shake their body to some good music.
They were praying against all odds that the reason for the occasion, “Honouring and Ensuring a Fulfilling Life for Our Mothers’ which was sponsored by Unique Floral Gardens, Marie Stopes International, Ghana, Accra Brewery Ltd. and Mama Lit Special, would not be marred by the rain.
The event was a lunch buffet to honour mothers and reward top six mothers who won the ‘Maame Ayekoo’ promotion on Asempa 94.7 fm. Listeners were required to answer questions about their mothers for which those who gave accurate answers were selected as winners.
The criteria for selection among others included participation in the on-air ‘Maame Ayekoo’ promotion. Prizes ranging from Maggie products, hampers from Second Image and beauty products from Ama Ghana were given to deserving mothers. Those who participated in programmes or ‘serial callers’ were also awarded for their immense contribution.
As part of the event, resource persons were invited to speak on selected health issues pertaining to women in their middle ages in the areas of managing middle age health crises (managing menopause), cervical cancer: Its causes, symptoms and prevention.
Other non-health issues also covered were women’s rights and domestic violence, small and medium scale trade and finance. But during question time, the men took over the programme and started bombarding the resource person with questions. It was indeed funny as the men asked questions pertaining to sex and contraceptives.
The objective for the event is to fellowship with our mothers and use the occasion to educate and inform women on pertinent issues that affect their lives.
Prominent personalities, especially women or mothers in high offices or in successful businesses were also invited to interact with mothers to inspire them and to promote the ‘Can do’ attitude in women.
With Maame Dokonu as Master of Ceremonies, giving mothers encouragement and praise, while Ohemaa Mercy treated them to some of her hit songs including Edin Jesus and W’dwen, the buffet turned out as a huge family reunion as mothers and their children took to the floor when the rain stopped briefly.
As could be expected, the celebration will be incomplete without the song, Sweet Mother I no go forget you by Prince Nico Mbanga. It played on end throughout the event and each time it was played, people will rush to the floor again.
If for nothing at all, the fact that mothers day is being accorded the necessary recognition to celebrate mothers contribution to society is a laudable one that should be encouraged. Where will we be without our mothers?
